IPC J-STD-001 Space Addendum
The IPC J-STD-001 Space Applications Electronic Hardware Addendum is a (4) hour block of instruction also known as Module 6, which is more commonly referred to as the J-STD-001 Space Addendum. The IPC J-STD-001 Space Addendum certification provides additional requirements over those published in IPC J-STD-001 to ensure the reliability of soldered electrical and electronic assemblies that must survive the vibration and thermal cyclic environments getting to and operating in space. The Space Addendum is a supplement to the J-STD-001 CIT or CIS program that defines requirements for materials, processes, equipment, and end item criteria for the manufacturing of soldered electronic assemblies. The Space Addendum module is testable, and requires a 80% or better for both CIT and CIS for certification.
This optional Module to the J-STD-001 Specialist Training Program is not published as part of the regular J-STD-001 course materials. There are no workmanship requirements for this module. The IPC acceptability and process control documents, criteria are set forth for three classes of product based on the desired reliability level. Class 3 (High Performance Electronic Products) is designed to cover the requirements for reliability of assemblies where the “end-use environment may be uncommonly harsh.
Prerequisites/ Who Should Become Certified
J-STD-001 CIT or CIS certification, all attendees must be certified to the same J-STD-001 revision as the space addendum. CIS attendees must be certified in Module 1 and at least one other module before attending the J-STD-001 Space Electronics Hardware Addendum Program. Employees with assembly tasks, duties, and functions, who are responsible for ensuring the quality & reliability of electronic & electrical assemblies, should become certified to IPC J-STD-001 Space Addendum, including assemblers, operators, electricians, technicians, engineers, manufacturing supervisors, etc.
